Política Madeira

The grand meeting of the Madeiran social democrats takes place in a scenario of early regional legislative elections, called for May 26, following the political crisis triggered by a process that investigates suspicions of corruption in the archipelago and in which Miguel Albuquerque, who has also led the Regional Government since 2015, was constituted as a defendant. Before the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, called the early regional elections, the PSD/Madeira went to internal elections, in a suffrage that once again opposed Miguel Albuquerque to Manuel António Correia, repeating the dispute for leadership that took place in 2014. Miguel Albuquerque, who has led the party since that year, once again defeated Manuel António Correia - who had the support of Alberto João Jardim, who led the party in Madeira for almost four decades -, obtaining 2,243 votes, against 1,856 from the list of his opponent, in a universe of 4,388 members in a position to vote. At the end of January, Miguel Albuquerque was constituted as a defendant in a process that investigates suspicions of corruption in Madeira and also involves two businessmen linked to civil construction and the social democrat Pedro Calado, who at the time was mayor of the Municipal Council of Funchal and, later, resigned from the position. The PSD/CDS-PP coalition Regional Government had until then the parliamentary support of the sole PAN deputy, Mónica Freitas. However, after Mónica Freitas withdrew her support for Miguel Albuquerque, the social democrat resigned from the leadership of the Regional Government, causing the executive to fall, which has thus been under management since the beginning of February. The PSD/Madeira congress also takes place after the party has submitted the list of candidates for the elections of May 26, which is once again headed by Miguel Albuquerque. Unlike what happened in the last regional legislative elections, held at the end of September, now the PSD and CDS-PP will not go to the polls in a coalition. According to Miguel Albuquerque, the elections will test "the confidence" of the Madeiran electorate in the party that has always governed the autonomous region. On the day after the congress, which will take place on Saturday and Sunday at the Madeira Congress Center, in Funchal, the PSD's regional candidates for the European elections of June 9 will be announced.
