Portas highlights the party's resilience and asks for "competence in service"
The centrist ex-president Paulo Portas considered today that the CDS-PP has resisted several announced deaths and now has the opportunity to "prove well, with competence in service", that the party is necessary.

The former Deputy Prime Minister of the PSD/CDS Government led by Pedro Passos Coelho left this message in a video shown to the attendees of the 31st grand meeting of the centrists, which started today and ends on Sunday, in Viseu.
Portas began by emphasizing that the congress is meeting weeks after the Portuguese "said that they want alternation and change", claiming that "there is no democracy without alternation".
"We all know that when democracies stop having alternation, they become a fiction", he argued.
On the other hand, he continued, "the vote of the Portuguese within the framework of the Democratic Alliance [coalition that brought together PSD, CDS-PP and PPM] also expressed the desire that the voice of Christian democracy, open to liberals and conservatives, as has always happened in this institution, would return to parliament and return to government".
"This good, positive evolution contains a lesson about our contemporary history. Almost 50 years ago during the PREC [Revolutionary Process in Course], an extreme left-wing thought that it would eliminate CDS politically, intellectually and even physically, they were completely wrong. Two years ago, another extreme, this time on the right, thought that the end of CDS had come. They rushed and were wrong again", he said.
Portas stressed that CDS "is one of the resistant and persistent parties and therefore founders of Portuguese democracy and there will always be voters to defend it and activists to protect it".
"The opportunity that we are given now is to prove well, with competence in service, that the party is necessary, that the party contributes to competence and is useful to the Portuguese. In the era of extremes, nothing is more necessary than conviction with moderation. In the era of demagogy, nothing is more useful than serving others with competence", he warned.
