"I agreed with the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, that within the scope of Defense and the Government, we will create a commission for a proper national commemoration of the 50th anniversary of November 25," he said.
Recalling that the CDS-PP celebrates this date "every year" and is something "almost identical" for the party, Nuno Melo stressed that "November 25 was a military movement that saved democracy in Portugal." The president of the CDS-PP also quoted former President of the Republic Ramalho Eanes, who defended that "November 25 was the continuation of April 25" to affirm: "it is exactly what we have thought in the CDS for 49 years." In an intervention of about half an hour, the president of the CDS-PP took the opportunity to repeat, before representatives of the PSD (coalition partner) and other parties, what he had told the congressmen, that "the CDS is not an extension of the PSD, in the same way that the CDS does not intend to replace the PSD," valuing its "uniqueness." The centrist leader also said that in parliament the party "will be totally loyal to the coalition, and also clear in this uniqueness that adds to it." "The CDS-PP will be on the side of the structural reforms necessary to put Portugal in a cycle of sustainable economic growth and in the front line of the European Union, returning income to families and companies, promoting better salaries and strengthening the social state," he said. Nuno Melo also said that the party will value the "role of families, the value of merit and work, reactivating social mobility and the irreplaceable role of the middle class." "The CDS-PP will fight against corruption and for the reform of Justice and the authority of the State, with respect for the security forces and for regulated immigration," he added, indicating that the party "will pull for agriculture and the rural world, for sustainability with realistic and achievable goals, for an education with demand and opportunities, a Social State that joins the public matrix with the capacities installed in the social and private sectors, also focused on the challenges of the aging of the Portuguese population," he listed. "This is what, with all loyalty, the CDS will do alongside the PSD together in the government of Portugal," Melo assured. [News updated at 15:46]

Nuno Melo made this announcement during the closing speech of the 31st CDS-PP Congress, which ended today in Viseu, with the election of the new national bodies.
The centrist leader wants this commemoration "to be plural and fair, made up of military and civilians," and considered it a matter of justice.
"In 2024 we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of April 25. In 2025, we must celebrate - and not forget - the 50th anniversary of November 25," he said.
