In this way, the Assembly of the Republic is being devalued, giving a sign that it "is nothing more than a stopover to reach other less visible but more profitable places", he considered. According to Renato Sampaio, at a time when democracy is at a crossroads, the PS, "as a fundamental pillar of the democratic regime, cannot weaken it, on the contrary, it is obliged to have a strategy to strengthen it". In his opinion, if democracy is a right for all, it is also a responsibility for all. In the last European elections, in 2019, the PS won with about 33% of the votes and elected nine MEPs, having presented former minister Pedro Marques as the head of the list.
