Política DE-SNS

Liberal Initiative deputy Mário Amorim considered that "it would make no sense" to dismantle the Executive Board of the National Health Service (DE-SNS), after the resignation request of its executive director, Fernando Araújo. In statements to journalists from the Assembly of the Republic, the liberal deputy recognized the "competence" of the hitherto leader of the DE-SNS, considering that "it is a clear contrast with the history of appointments of the Socialist Party (PS), which as a rule has to go to the party directory and rarely manages to find duly competent people". "On our part, we would not oppose it being maintained", he reiterated, stating that "it makes sense for this DE-SNS to continue to exist". Mário Amorim also considered that the statement in which Fernando Araújo reveals the resignation request is "a little bit evasive". "What the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, asked the DE-SNS was to explain why the Local Health Units (ULS) were created quickly without there having been empirical support with data to justify it. A deadline was given to do so and the DE-SNS had this deadline, so the reason why the DE-SNS submitted its resignation at this time is not understood", he said. For the liberal deputy, "it is important to depoliticize health and that technical decisions are not influenced by ideological visions of health", and that "the DE-SNS has a purpose, it has a goal and it makes sense for it to exist". "The Government also has the legitimacy to decide who should be in charge of the DE-SNS, especially because it is a position that requires some political trust". "We hope that the Government does not intend to revisit the organic structure of the Ministry of Health and focus on the essential, which is to solve the problems of the Portuguese", he also appealed. The executive director of the National Health Service announced his resignation, together with his team, to the Minister of Health, alleging that he does not want to be an obstacle to the Government in the policies and measures it deems necessary. "Respecting the principle of institutional loyalty, I will submit to the Minister of Health, together with the team I lead, the resignation request from the position of executive director of the National Health Service", said Fernando Araújo in a statement. According to Fernando Araújo, this "difficult decision" will allow the new guardianship to "execute the policies and measures it deems necessary, with the required speed, preventing the current executive board (DE-SNS) from being considered an obstacle to its implementation". "The DE-SNS is a technical body, a public institute of the State, which must be above political issues or party agendas, and which executes public policies determined by the Government", also highlighted the statement signed by Fernando Araújo. The executive board started its activity on January 1, 2023, following the new Statute of the National Health Service (SNS) still proposed by the then Minister Marta Temido, with the aim of coordinating the assistance response of all SNS units and modernizing its management.
