PSD admits that IRS initiatives will be lowered without a vote but wants a swift process

The PSD parliamentary leader admitted today that the initiatives within the scope of the IRS go down to the budget committee without a vote, provided that the legislative process "is swift", avoiding clarifying whether the Government's bill will be requested to be withdrawn.

Speaking to journalists at the Assembly of the Republic, Hugo Soares considered that "the initiative for the proposals to be able to go down to the specialty without a vote are initiatives that should come from the proposer himself".

"If the parties understand that they should request the descent without a vote to the committee, which is the PSD's opinion, it is a good principle so that we can all dialogue in the specialty with two conditions that I would like to put forward: the first is that the specialty work is fast, because there is an issue that concerns us fundamentally, which is to lower taxes for the middle class in Portugal", he said.

The second condition is that, "after there is or is not an understanding, the final texts that reach the plenary can be voted on in the initial vote, in the specialty and in the final global vote, in one day".

"If so, from our point of view, it seems very useful to have this discussion", he considered, pointing out that "it does not delay anything because the debate on the specialty should always be done".

The social democrat also said that the PSD is "in talks with all parliamentary groups" to "see what is the possible understanding".

"If the proposals have to be voted on today, there is no problem either, they will be voted on today", he pointed out.

Hugo Soares did not clarify whether the Government's bill could go down to the committee without a vote.

"Let's see how the debate goes and we will continue to talk to the other benches. The dialogue must be constructive and permanent, with a focus that is the essential focus, lowering taxes on the middle class", he said.

Hugo Soares welcomed the other parties for presenting proposals within the scope of the IRS, indicating that "they come in the wake of the Government's initiative, but they come to debate", and stressed that the Government proposed a "tax cut" after "only 15 days of governance".

"Normally, when we see tax matters in parliament, namely at the beginning of governance, it is always a matter of tax increases", he argued.

Asked about the statements of the leader of Chega, who said he had contacted Hugo Soares and suggested that his proposal and the Government's proposal be lowered without a vote.

The parliamentary leader said he was not concerned "with details" and considered that "the Portuguese are effectively concerned with knowing whether or not they will have tax relief".

"The Portuguese do not even want to worry or even take up the time of those who should serve the public interest by saying, by pointing the finger in the air very quickly, I was the first to call. I think that even if I want to tell you, so as not to use a stronger expression, I would say it is absolutely unnecessary", he defended.

The parliament is discussing this afternoon the proposal of the PSD/CDS-PP Government that changes the IRS rates, with all the opposition parties presenting their own initiatives, and the outcome of the votes is uncertain, taking into account the balance of forces in the Assembly of the Republic.
