The coordinator of the Left Bloc (BE), Mariana Mortágua, reacted this Wednesday to the controversial statements by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa about António Costa and Luís Montenegro, considering that the comments were "of discrimination and prejudice".
"It is not only in bad taste, it is not only in poor taste. In fact, it is an improper way for the President of the Republic to express the relationship with the head of government, regardless of the person who holds that position", Mariana Mortágua began by saying in statements to journalists.
In the opinion of the Left Bloc, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa's statements "are not up to the position he holds" and "show prejudice against the rural world, against the interior".
"These are statements that express classism, discrimination, prejudice and, therefore, cannot be accepted", she also states, stressing that the BE "distances itself" from the comments and that it considers "important that the President of the Republic retract", since it is "unacceptable" behaviour for "someone who holds such an important place in our Republic".
It should be recalled that the statements in question are by the President of the Republic, who stated that the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, has "rural behaviour" and that the former head of government, António Costa, is "slow because he is oriental". His comments were made on Tuesday during a dinner with foreign journalists, according to Correio Braziliense.
