The head of the Socialist Party (PS) list for the European Elections, Marta Temido, stated this Wednesday that the dismissal of the provider of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, Ana Jorge, raises "concerns", but guaranteed that she will await explanations to "understand what happened". In statements to journalists from Martim Moniz, on the sidelines of the parade to mark Labour Day, Marta Temido stated that this is "a process that naturally raises concerns due to what has been made public", but that "it will have to be explained" to "understand what specifically happened". "The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa has a delegation of state functions to ensure social protection in Lisbon and it is, naturally, something that is very worrying in relation to the Santa Casa's ability to continue to ensure its role", she stated. Ana Jorge, it should be recalled, took office on 2 May 2023, chosen by the previous socialist Government of António Costa, and inherited an institution with serious financial difficulties, after the years of the pandemic and a process of internationalisation of social games, carried out by the administration of the provider Edmundo Martinho, which may have caused losses in the order of 50 million euros. On Tuesday, the Government accused the dismissed provider and the members of the Board of "seriously negligent actions" that affected the management of the institution, thus justifying the dismissal.
