The leader of the Left Bloc (BE), Mariana Mortágua, stressed this Wednesday that Portugal will be "stronger and grow more" if it is "capable of paying better salaries and providing better working conditions", but also "fewer working hours".
"In Portugal, people work more hours than in the rest of Europe. Salaries are below the European average and there is more precariousness, with more temporary contracts and less stability in life", she said in Lisbon, on the sidelines of the parade to mark Labour Day.
The BE member defended that "the country will become stronger and grow more" if it is "capable of paying better salaries and providing better working conditions", but also "fewer working hours".
In this sense, the BE presented three proposals to improve the lives of workers: a minimum wage of 900 euros this year; a four-day working week; and salary ranges.
Mariana Mortágua stressed that the upcoming European Elections, scheduled for 9 June, "are very important", since "all the decisions that are made in Europe" have an impact on Portugal.
The BE member also accused the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Socialist Party (PS) of not having "a serious commitment to increasing the minimum wage" nor "any proposal to increase the average wage".
It should be stressed that hundreds of people began to march up Avenida Almirante Reis towards Alameda Afonso Henriques in Lisbon at around 3:30 pm to mark Labour Day.
"1st May, increase wages and pensions, guarantee rights" and "Fight exploitation, April for a Portugal with a future", are the slogans that head a march that the general secretary of the CGTP, Tiago Oliveira, wants to be a demonstration by workers that the values of April are as present as they were 50 years ago.
