The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), Pedro Nuno Santos, highlighted, this Wednesday, the celebration of the 50th anniversary of May 1st in Portugal, stating that the day "flooded the streets with the joy of freedom and the confidence in a better future".

"50 years ago, the country left their homes on May 1st and flooded the streets with the joy of freedom and the confidence in a better future. This celebration of Labour Day remains, to this day, the largest popular demonstration in our history", the socialist began by referring in a publication on the social network X (former Twitter).

For the leader of the opposition, this is a "formative moment of our democracy and a date of special significance, due to the history of these 50 years and what it asks of us in the future".

"Since 1974, the Socialist Party has affirmed the conviction that guided Mário Soares and that, on that first Labour Day, reinforced the hope of millions of Portuguese people. We know that freedom is also measured by our capacity to guarantee a fairer society, with dignified work for all. And we will be here to continue to fight for this. To work", he concluded.

It should be noted that Labour Day is an internationally celebrated date, always celebrated on the first day of May, based on May 1, 1886, when a strike began in the North American city of Chicago for better working conditions.

In Portugal, the celebration of the date was forbidden during the Estado Novo and was only commemorated freely again in 1974, after the Carnation Revolution.
