The Socialist Álvaro Beleza commented on Wednesday that the dismissal at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (SCML) and stated that the "Governments should have respect for the people who are at the head of these institutions, regardless of the party".

In a comment space on CNN Portugal, Álvaro Beleza praised the former ombudswoman Ana Jorge, whom he considers a "serious, competent person" who "denounced" and "realized" the problems that exist at the Santa Casa. "She was the Minister of Health, she is an illustrious pediatrician and I think that the Governments should have respect for the people who are at the head of these institutions, regardless of the party", defended the Socialist.

Álvaro Beleza reiterated that in the past, the Governments, whether from the PS or PSD, "were more careful". "Because in order to be respected, we have to respect others", he considered.

For the commentator, we should "think better about whether to keep the status of the Santa Casa in the hands of the State".

The Socialist also defended that it is necessary to "tackle the problem [of the Santa Casa], see responsibilities". "This has to be scrutinized", he reiterated.

"We are in the 50th anniversary of April 25th and it is a good time to see the reforms that need to be made, whether in politics, justice, this one of the Santa Casa and less of this thing of 'now I have come to power and I will put my people in and remove those who were there'", said Álvaro Beleza.

It is recalled that the former ombudswoman of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (SCML) guaranteed that the dismissal of the Board of the institution was communicated to her in a "rude, arrogant and slanderous way".

On Monday, the Government made public the dismissal of the SCML Board with immediate effect, alleging that they were "incapable" of resolving the "serious financial problems of the SCML".
