The Assembly of the Republic approved in general, this Thursday, the Socialist Party (PS) proposal for the end of tolls on the former SCUTs.
The proposal, which is now going down to the 6th Committee (Economy, Public Works and Housing) was approved with the votes in favor of the PS, Left Bloc, Portuguese Communist Party, Livre, Chega and PAN and the votes against of the Social Democratic Party and CDS. The Liberal Initiative (IL) abstained.
The proposal in question provides for the elimination of "toll fees on sections and subsections of the Interior motorways (former SCUT) or where there are no alternative routes that allow use in quality and safety”.
At issue is the end of tolls on the A4 - Transmontana and Marão Tunnel, A13 and A13-1 - Pinhal Interior, A22 - Algarve, A23 - Beira Interior, A24 - Interior Norte, A25 - Beiras Litoral e Alta and A28 - Minho on the sections between Esposende and Antas and between Neiva and Darque.
The criticisms (and the 'help') from the Right
The proposal was discussed this Thursday in the Assembly of the Republic, with the socialists being accused by the Right of "hypocrisy" and "political immaturity and incoherence". During the discussion, the social democrat Carlos Silva questioned why the current secretary-general of the PS, Pedro Nuno Santos, did not abolish tolls while he was minister of Infrastructure, and Carlos Guimarães Pinto, from the IL, 'brought up' the history of socialist votes on this matter and ended, in the end, in chorus with several deputies from the right, with a "against, against, against".
For the CDS-PP, Paulo Núncio considered that the "PS's proposal to eliminate tolls should be included in the book of the greatest hypocrisies and falsehoods of this parliament", accusing the socialists of, while in government, not only not having abolished tolls but having always voted against.
The approval of the proposal was already expected, after Chega indicated that its vote would be in favor. The party leader instructed the parliamentary group to give the green light to the socialist proposal, considering that, if it made it unfeasible, the party "would be absolutely inconsistent with itself".
"Chega defended in the electoral campaign, clearly and explicitly, the end of all tolls. I also said that it was one of the most daring proposals. It was the commitment we made: to work gradually towards the end of all tolls", said André Ventura.
