Chega leader André Ventura reacted this Thursday to the approval of the Socialist Party's proposal, which provides for the end of tolls on former SCUTs.

"Once again, proof of the enormous incapacity of this AD Government to legislate and to legislate in accordance with what should be the definitive break with the page we turned on March 10", he said, in statements to journalists, in Parliament.

Ventura also stressed that the party he leads also tried to make the Government aware of the end of all tolls - and not just those in the interior and the Algarve - and that it would be important to tell the Portuguese in how many years all tolls would end. "The Government chose not to do so. It chose to maintain what it had and to try to condition the Assembly, speaking of coalitions or negative alliances", he accused.

Chega voted in favour of the Socialist Party's proposal, having explained before the vote that during the election campaign they defended the end of all tolls "in a clear and explicit way".

"It is true that the Socialist Party's project conveys enormous hypocrisy to the country. The hypocrisy of those who did not do so in eight years and now want to do so a month after the legislative elections. But at the end of the day, when the Portuguese arrive home, they will not be concerned about who approved what. Nor whether or not there was hypocrisy. They will be interested in what has always interested Chega: Will we pay less in tolls or will we not pay tolls, in essential and decisive areas of our territory. In abandoned and disregarded areas, which have long deserved this gesture", he justified.

The president of Chega also pointed out that "once again the Government of Luís Montenegro is on the wrong side of History" and that in addition to having been confronted in the Assembly, "it was defeated".

"Once again, it was confronted and defeated in the Assembly, in a vote that should not even have been of great division", he said.
