According to the budgets consulted by Lusa, the 14 candidacies (13 single parties and a coalition of two parties) plan to spend a total of 949,678.34 euros on the campaign, which will run until the 24th.

At stake in the elections on the 26th are the 47 seats in the hemicycle of the Madeira Regional Legislative Assembly and, according to data from the Ministry of Internal Administration, until Tuesday 254,522 voters were registered to vote.

The draw for the order on the ballot placed the National Democratic Alternative (ADN) in first place, followed by the Left Bloc (BE), Socialist Party (PS), Livre (L), Liberal Initiative (IL), React, Include, Recycle (RIR), CDU -- Democratic Unitarian Coalition (PCP/PEV), Chega (CH), CDS -- Popular Party (CDS-PP), Land Party (MPT), Social Democratic Party (PPD/PSD), People-Animals-Nature (PAN), Portuguese Labour Party (PTP) and Together for the People (JPP).

The early elections of 26 May will take place eight months after the most recent regional elections, after the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, dissolved the Madeiran parliament, following the political crisis triggered in January, when the leader of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was made a defendant in a case in which suspicions of corruption are being investigated.

The PSD has always governed in the archipelago and won with an absolute majority in 11 elections between 1976 and 2015.

In the last legislature, the Madeira Legislative Assembly had 20 representatives from the PSD, three from the CDS-PP (with whom the social democrats went to the polls in coalition), 11 from the PS, five from the JPP and four from Chega. The CDU, the BE and the PAN each occupied one seat.
