The result of the specific motions was announced this morning at the 14th Congress of the Free Party, which ends today at the Costa de Caparica municipal pavilion, in the district of Setúbal, and out of a total of 25 only four were rejected.
Among the approved texts is a motion that proposes the creation of a working group on the internal primary process, after the controversy generated by the choice of the top candidate for the European elections, Francisco Paupério.
"Having as main motivation the constant search for the most adequate system for our vision of the world and politics, we propose the creation of a working group to thoroughly analyze the previous primary processes of the Free Party, similar processes in other European parties, as well as to use the most up-to-date scientific literature on this matter to prepare a new study on the Free Party's primaries that will serve as the basis for the discussion of this issue within the party", the text reads.
Another one of the approved motions, which has among its proponents MP Jorge Pinto, wants the Free Party to defend in the Assembly of the Republic a national referendum on regionalization in 2026.
"The creation of a democratic regional power in continental Portugal will certainly contribute to renewing the Portuguese democratic system, making it more agile and autonomous to the detriment of the current centralization and hierarchy, creating an intermediate level of political decision-making closer to the territory and the population that horizontalizes and mediates the relations between the central power and the local power", the text argues.
One of the approved motions and most debated on the first day of the great meeting is dedicated to youth, entitled "Paths to Strengthen the Active Participation of Young People".
The text advocates the creation of a thematic circle "Youth and Youth Policies" that will be specifically dedicated to the problems of youth with the aim of developing "youth policies" and urges the next party leadership, elected today, to create a National Strategy for Youth.
During the debate on the first day, there were those who defended the need for these thematic circles, warning that the far right "is in schools every day" appealing for the vote of the younger generations, and other militants who considered them unnecessary to debate policies with an impact on young people.
The Free Party does not have a party youth wing and the various members who took to the podium did not express any desire to create one, rejecting a "pool of the big ones and another of the little ones".
The motion entitled "National Priority: Investing in Public and Cooperative Housing" was also given the 'green light', in which it is argued that access to affordable housing "requires a strong continuous investment in the coming decades in public and cooperative housing to increase the non-speculative housing stock".
The proponents suggest that the Free Party negotiate with the other parties in parliament measures in this area, namely "the way in which the private sector participates in the promotion of affordable housing through attractive tax mechanisms" and suggest "a more ambitious housing cooperative program".
The congress also approved a text that defends "full equality" in the party, reinforcing "actions for internal accessibility and inclusion that break down forms of capacitism and gender inequality".
Sport as a "space for cooperation, inclusion, equality and freedom", the fight against hate speech, "more ecology in the Free Party's political action" or the creation of support programs for the exercise of journalistic activity are also among the approved topics.
