Ana Catarina Mendes welcomes the appeal of the Livre to unite against the far right
The candidate for the European Parliament and Socialist deputy Ana Catarina Mendes welcomed today the appeal from Livre for a union of all democrats against the far-right in Portugal and in Europe.

Ana Catarina Mendes spoke to journalists at the end of the closing session of the 14th Livre congress, which took place in Costa de Caparica, in Almada, in the district of Setúbal.
"The Socialist Party democratically welcomes the holding of this congress, which highlighted a set of problems that are happening in the country and in Europe, particularly in the defense of democracy and the welfare state. It is very important that all democrats unite against what is the rise of the extreme right in Portugal and what are the enemies of democracy", she said.
At the closing session of the congress, the deputy and founder of Livre Rui Tavares thanked the presence of representatives from other parties, calling for unity in defense of freedoms and guarantees.
He appealed to the left-wing and progressive parties for cooperation and to those who are not left-wing, but who identify with the values against hatred and intolerance, to be on the same side as Livre.
"We may not be on the same side in the NHS, in taxation and in economic policies, but we have to be on the same side in the defense of freedoms and guarantees because times are dangerous", said Rui Tavares.
Speaking to journalists, Ana Catarina Mendes also said that Livre came to say that it is available to collaborate with its strength to contribute to progressive solutions for the country and for solutions on the left, which she underlined "with sympathy and pleasure", at a time when the European spectrum is witnessing the resurgence of the extreme right.
"What Livre came to say is that it will be on the side of democrats, progressives, in defense of those who identify with the humanist values of Europe. From this point of view, I underline with great sympathy and pleasure what were its definitions for Europe", said Ana Catarina Mendes.
