"If we have this parliamentary power, this is what we will implement: an audit of the public management accounts of the Regional Government of Madeira, in all sectors", he said, stressing that this will be the "first measure".

Miguel Castro was speaking to journalists during a campaign initiative for the early elections of May 26, which began today, in the parish of Santo da Serra, in the interior of the municipality of Santa Cruz, where the candidates visited the local market accompanied by the party's national leader, André Ventura.

"This same audit will give us the numbers that we suspect and the people of Madeira and Porto Santo will get to know the true and correct accounts of the Autonomous Region of Madeira", he said.

As the party's national leader had previously stated, Miguel Castro also guaranteed that Chega/Madeira, currently represented by four deputies in the regional parliament, will not establish any agreement with the PSD or with the PS, the largest opposition party, regardless of the electoral result.

"It will be Chega in parliament", he said, and then added: "Within parliament, the parties all talk to each other. We do not talk in the corridors of power, we do not talk in closed-door offices, because we have nothing to hide from the people of Madeira and Porto Santo".

And he stressed: "Whatever we have to talk about, we will talk about it within parliament, which is the house of democracy, which is where all the people of Madeira and Porto Santo can see us".

The head of the list, also the regional leader of Chega and a deputy in the Legislative Assembly, guaranteed that this will always be his position, even despite any pressure.

"I suffer pressure every day, I suffer threats every day, but that is certainly not what will make me change my mind", he said, and then stressed: "I am not afraid of suffering some more serious harm, but the truth is that I am here for a principle, for my party, for Madeira and for the people of Madeira and that is what I will do until the end".

The legislative elections of Madeira will take place on May 26, with 14 candidacies competing for the 47 seats in the regional parliament, in a single electoral constituency.

The draw for the order on the ballot paper placed the Alternativa Democrática Nacional (ADN) in first place, followed by Bloco de Esquerda (BE), Partido Socialista (PS), Livre (L), Iniciativa Liberal (IL), Reagir, Incluir, Reciclar (RIR), CDU -- Coligação Democrática Unitária (PCP/PEV), Chega (CH), CDS -- Partido Popular (CDS-PP), Partido da Terra (MPT), Partido Social-Democrata (PPD/PSD), Pessoas-Animais-Natureza (PAN), Partido Trabalhista Português (PTP) and Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP).

According to data from the Ministry of Internal Administration, as of Tuesday, 254,522 voters were registered to vote.

The early elections take place eight months after the most recent regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeiran parliament, following the political crisis triggered in January, when the leader of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named as a defendant in a process in which suspicions of corruption are being investigated.

In September 2023, the PSD/CDS coalition won without an absolute majority and elected 23 deputies. The PS won 11, the JPP five, Chega four, while the CDU, the IL, the PAN (which signed an agreement for parliamentary incidence with the social democrats) and the BE obtained one mandate each.

The PSD has always governed in the archipelago and won with an absolute majority in 11 elections between 1976 and 2015.
