"The Liberal Initiative has outlined five major goals that it aspires to achieve by 2028, emphasizing pragmatic solutions instead of unattainable electoral promises," indicated the head of the list and leader of the party in the region, Nuno Morna, stressing that "these goals represent concrete results that we affirm can be achieved through liberal policies, contrasting with the approach of empty promises and easy options adopted by others."
The IL candidacy concentrated the initiatives of the first day of the campaign, which started today, in the center of Funchal, where several activities are also taking place within the scope of the Flower Festival, one of the largest tourist posters in the autonomous region, which runs until May 26. Nuno Morna did not participate in this campaign action, since he is on the island of Porto Santo, but the party issued a statement with declarations from the head of the list. "In the field of economic growth, we propose a substantial reduction in taxes to increase the purchasing power of the Madeirans. The idea is that fewer taxes encourage investment and innovation, thus stimulating economic growth and creating a favorable environment for businesses and consumers," says the IL's only deputy in the regional parliament, stressing that the goal is to "move quickly towards a Regional Tax System that promotes growth." In the health sector, the Liberal Initiative advocates reducing waiting times and increasing the choice options for patients, arguing that "patient autonomy and competition between service providers can increase the efficiency and quality of health care." Therefore, it considers that "all the installed capacity in the public, private and social sectors" should be used to reduce waiting lists for medical procedures. In education, the liberals' proposal is to "combat complacency and increase demand, giving schools more autonomy to manage their resources and curricula." In the housing sector, Nuno Morna says that the IL has identified bureaucracy, high taxes, fees and licenses as "major obstacles", stressing that their reduction and elimination will be a "means of increasing supply and making housing more affordable." At the level of the political system, the IL candidacy advocates the need for "more and better autonomy with responsibility" through the revision of the Constitution, the Political-Administrative Statute of the autonomous region, the Electoral Law and the Regional Finance Law. "This is how we commit ourselves to effective and transparent governance. We are going to make a difference," says Nuno Morna. The Madeira legislative elections are taking place with 14 candidacies competing for the 47 seats in the regional parliament, in a single electoral constituency: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, CDU (PCP/PEV), Chega, CDS-PP, MPT, PSD, PAN, PTP and JPP. The early elections take place eight months after the most recent regional elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeiran parliament, following the political crisis triggered in January, when the leader of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named a defendant in a process in which suspicions of corruption are being investigated. In September 2023, the PSD/CDS coalition won without an absolute majority and elected 23 deputies. The PS won 11, the JPP five, Chega four, while the CDU, the IL, the PAN (which signed an agreement of parliamentary incidence with the social democrats) and the BE each obtained a mandate.
