Temido considers it necessary to "quickly overcome" AIMA problems

The PS's lead candidate for the European elections considered today that it is necessary to "quickly overcome" the problems of the Agency for Migration and Asylum Integration (AIMA), recalling, however, that the agency was created less than a year ago.

"This pressure [on the institution] already existed, it is now being reported more, and it is not because it is more or less visible that it is better or worse. It is, unfortunately, a situation that needs to be overcome quickly. I think that is AIMA's commitment", said Marta Temido upon arriving at the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP).

The socialist, who was Minister of Health in the previous Government, admitted that no one "finds it normal or is satisfied" with having hundreds of people gathered at the door of AIMA to be seen.

However, Marta Temido stressed that it should not be forgotten that AIMA started operating in October 2023, and is an institution that is not even a year old.

"The start-up of an institution with a lot of demand pressure and with a considerable volume of pending issues is an institution that has greater difficulties, so we have to give it some time", she insisted.

SIC Notícias reports today that there are immigrants sleeping at the door of AIMA to get tickets.

The PS's leading candidate in the European elections, which will take place on June 9th, recalled that AIMA plans to respond regularly to pending requests by the end of the year.

AIMA is working to unblock a set of procedures that will allow it to respond more quickly, with more quality and in a more integrated way to the demand for documentation from a group of citizens, she reinforced.

"We have also had a change in procedures, as has been reported, and therefore it is natural that there is some disruption", said Marta Temido.

In October 2023, António Costa's Government proceeded with the extinction of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), transferring its functions to AIMA.

Asked whether the extinction of SEF was positive, Marta Temido replied that the change was necessary and that, if it still existed, it would be having the same problems as AIMA "there is no doubt about that".

"This agency has a clear mission and I think that all Portuguese people understand the logic behind the creation of AIMA, which is based on the need to separate two functions, one of border control and one of responding to documentation and the integration of people", she stressed.
