AIMA? More "resources" needed to clear backlog
The PCP secretary-general, Paulo Raimundo, today defended that the Agency for the Integration of Migrations and Asylum (AIMA) needs human and technical resources to resolve the 400 thousand pending processes.

"The only way to solve these issues faster is by reinforcing AIMA with people, with human and technical resources, exceptionally, that quickly solve this issue", affirmed Paulo Raimundo, when questioned about the fact that the agency demands the advanced payment of costs.
"What AIMA needs is not advanced payments by those who want to see their situation regularized", added the general secretary of the PCP.
Paulo Raimundo also criticized the "hurry" with which the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) was extinguished, a decision that the PCP did not support.
"We did not support the extinction of SEF in the rushed way that it was, but in spite of everything it was two years. We had two years between the decision of extinction and its extinction. Good grief. Excuse the expression, but it was enough time to prepare things", he referred, reminding that it is not just about processes, but about 400 thousand people.
For the general secretary of the PCP, there was a lack of "will and political capacity" to respond to these processes, for which he said "extraordinary measures" are necessary.
"It is not worth us shedding crocodile tears over immigration and then, in practice, the State itself is contributing so that a significant part of those who seek a better life in Portugal, to which they have the right, are pushed into illegality and, in practice, that is what happens", he added.
SIC Notícias reports today that there are immigrants sleeping at the door of AIMA to get tickets.
In October 2023, the Government of António Costa proceeded with the extinction of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), transferring its functions to AIMA.
