The proposal was made by the BE's only deputy in the Azorean parliament and regional leader of the party, António Lima, through a letter sent to the president of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Luís Garcia, according to a press release from the Bloc.

In the letter, sent on Monday, António Lima points out that, "despite the lack of a specific diagnosis of the Azorean reality, some reports, mentioned by regional associations dedicated to LGBTQIAP+ rights, show alarming situations of discrimination and violence against homosexual, bisexual, trans and intersex people".

Therefore, in his understanding, initiatives like this, "due to the high symbolic value they carry, contribute to the visibility of an entire community, and are all the more important as homophobic and transphobic violence continues to be a reality in the country and in the region".

"This year, similar to what happened last year, the Assembly of the Republic will mark the date by illuminating the parliament building with the colours of the LGBTQIAP+ flag, a decision, proposed by the Bloc, that was approved by all parties, except for Chega", the note states.

The structure recalls that several municipalities in the country have already raised the LGBTQIAP+ flag (acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, pansexual and other sexual orientations and gender identities) on this or other relevant dates for "the fight for the rights of homosexual, bisexual, trans and intersex people", such as the municipality of Ponta Delgada on June 28, LGBTQIAP+ Pride Day.

The BE recalls that the National Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia has been celebrated in the country since 2015, when the Portuguese parliament unanimously approved to mark it, showing an increased commitment to "fulfilling national and international commitments to combat homophobic and transphobic discrimination".

"The date corresponds to the moment when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its international classification of diseases, in 1990", the bloc members point out.
