"We are facing the visit of a president of a country that is at war, therefore, the Portuguese state, fulfilling what it has to fulfill (...) should take advantage of this visit to contribute to the solution of peace, which is what the Ukrainian people need", said Paulo Raimundo, on the sidelines of a visit to the Serralves museum, in Porto.

Saying he was waiting "for more details" about the visit of the President of Ukraine to Portugal, the PCP secretary-general defended that this is "the great message" to be passed on by national entities.

"If it is a visit to add war to war, add death to death and add destruction to destruction, it is better not to come because that is what is happening every day", he added, refusing that the solution to the war in Ukraine involves the supply of military weapons.

"We need everyone to be forced to sit at the table to find solutions for the path to peace, the war will lead to nothing", he said.

Paulo Raimundo also considered normal the visit of Volodymyr Zelensky to Portugal, also taking into account the invitation made by the President of the Republic.

The Minister of National Defense, Nuno Melo, confirmed today that the visit of Volodymyr Zelensky to Portugal "is being prepared", without giving further details about the date or program of the trip.

"The visit is being prepared with the reservation it is supposed to have and we will see, very soon, how everything will happen", the Minister of Defense told journalists.

Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to Portugal was announced on Monday by SIC, which said that the Ukrainian head of state should also travel to Spain to sign bilateral security agreements.

Sources from the Spanish government told the Efe agency that Zelensky will visit the country "in the coming days" to sign an agreement with the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez.
