Speaking to journalists in parliament, Hugo Soares regretted that the institutions of the Republic are being occupied with "an issue that does not exist, is not of interest and aims to undermine respect for the institutions and the highest magistrate of the nation".

"On behalf of the PSD, the country can expect great urgency in resolving this joke. Those who play with the regime, with the institutions, should not be respected nor should they be taken seriously. We will do everything so that the process is quick and has the least possible impact", he assured.

The special committee to analyse the Chega project, which requires parliament to open a process against the President of the Republic for the crimes of treason, coercion against constitutional bodies and usurpation, which should be voted on, at the latest, on Friday in a plenary session, took office today.

The parliamentary leader of the PSD stressed that Chega is proposing to parliament that it initiate and communicate to the Supreme Court of Justice a process for a crime for which the party believes that the President of the Republic "should be sentenced to a prison term of between 10 and 20 years".

"If the matter were not serious, we could even say that if the absurd paid taxes, Portugal would no longer have any public accounts problems", he said ironically.

Hugo Soares expressed, on behalf of the party, the vehement condemnation of this process initiated by Chega.

"Chega and Dr. André Ventura really want the regime to fall into chaos, to fall into a kind of State without law or limits of common sense so that populism can reign", he accused.

Hugo Soares argued that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa merely expressed an opinion with which one may agree or disagree.

The draft resolution submitted to parliament on Monday by Chega requires the opening of a process against the President of the Republic for the crimes of treason, coercion against constitutional bodies and usurpation.

The initiative was announced last week by André Ventura, following statements by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa about a possible historical reparation to the former Portuguese colonies.
