"This lady here is forced to work, she has a very, very low pension, she cannot take care of her grandchildren", said the head of the MPT list, Válter Rodrigues, considering that "people of this age should have decent pensions and should be able to be happy".

Speaking to journalists during his visit to the Mercado dos Lavradores, the candidate argued that it is necessary not only to reduce the retirement age, but also to grant "decent pensions so that people can stay home and be happy".

"Because people are not happy, they cannot buy food, they cannot buy fish, meat, essential products are increasingly expensive", he stressed.

Válter Rodrigues said that a decent pension should be at least equivalent to the minimum wage, but stressed that even this amount is not enough and that it is also necessary to "find supplements for medication, for the treatment of diseases", among others.

In the campaign action, the candidate appealed for voters to vote for parties "that do not use taxpayers' money" and stressed that one of the MPT's causes is the increase in pensions.

The Madeira legislative elections take place with 14 candidates competing for the 47 seats in the regional parliament, in a single electoral constituency: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, CDU (PCP/PEV), Chega, CDS-PP, MPT, PSD, PAN, PTP and JPP.

The early elections take place eight months after the most recent regional elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeira parliament, following the political crisis triggered in January, when the leader of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was constituted as a defendant in a process in which suspicions of corruption are being investigated.

In September 2023, the PSD/CDS coalition won without an absolute majority and elected 23 deputies. The PS won 11, the JPP five, Chega four, while the CDU, IL, PAN (which signed an agreement on parliamentary incidence with the social democrats) and the BE obtained one mandate each.

The PSD has always governed in the archipelago and won with an absolute majority in 11 elections between 1976 and 2015.
