In a question addressed to the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, those deputies underline that, a few months ago, "the mayors of Lisbon and Madrid stated that the priority of investment in high-speed rail should be placed on the connection between these two cities".

With this option, there is a serious risk of generating a centripetal effect of Madrid in relation to Lisbon", warn the socialists, who recall that this priority was also reaffirmed, three weeks ago, by the European Commission.

They point out that, in the meantime, a public tender is underway to implement the Lisbon-Porto connection, "with the consecutive progress between Porto-Braga-Vigo being expected".

Thus, based on the investment priorities assumed on Tuesday by the Government, the PS parliamentarians want to know if the Government maintains the degree of priority in the execution of the Lisbon-Porto-Braga-Vigo high-speed rail link or if its rescheduling is planned.

If the degree of priority is maintained, the socialist deputies want to know "what is the schedule foreseen in the Government's plan".

On Tuesday, the Government approved in the Council of Ministers the anticipation of the completion of the Lisbon-Madrid high-speed rail line, including the third crossing of the Tagus (Chelas-Barreiro), estimating that everything could be ready in 2034.

Also on Tuesday, in Madrid, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, said that there is a consensus between the governments of Portugal and Spain regarding the high-speed train connections and the "same degree of priority" that the line between Madrid and Lisbon and the one planned to unite Lisbon, Porto and Vigo (northern Spain) should have.

"We want two connections to Spain, at least, and, therefore, both are important to us", said Paulo Rangel, who stressed that Portugal also has "to safeguard" the high-speed connection of the two largest cities in the country (Lisbon and Porto).

"We have to have both plans at the same time", he said.

Neither Rangel nor his Spanish counterpart committed to a timetable for the implementation of the high-speed rail connections between Portugal and Spain.
