According to the question by the communist deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, the fire that devastated the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, in Ponta Delgada, "left the largest island of the Azores archipelago in an extremely difficult situation, while the uncertainty about the reconstruction project, its costs and the estimated time increases".

The fire at the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, in Ponta Delgada, which broke out on May 4th, forced the transfer of all the patients who were hospitalized to various locations in the Azores, Madeira and mainland Portugal.

Paula Santos, quoted in a press release, intends to "obtain detailed and reliable information about the existing plans to restore normality in the provision of health care not only to the people of São Miguel, but to all Azoreans".

The MP emphasizes that the HDES, "being the largest hospital in the region, was responsible for providing a large number of specialty consultations and surgeries to most of the islands".

Today, the president of the executive of the Azores (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) defended that the participation of the Government of the Republic in the rehabilitation of the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo (HDES) should be 85%, as happened with Hurricane Lorenzo.

José Manuel Bolieiro told journalists that there will be funding from the Republic for the works to be carried out at the HDES due to the fire on May 4th and that, in his view, the participation should be 85% of the value of the planned intervention, which has yet to be defined.

"There is a history in terms of commitment that, in the case of Hurricane Lorenzo [which hit the region in October 2019], the State undertook to compensate for the repair of the damage by 85%. This is the proposal that I have for the Government of the Republic, in this case, also to assume [the participation in the expenses] in a supportive way", said the leader of the Azorean executive at the end of an audience with the board of the Portuguese Red Cross (CVP), held at the Palácio de Santana, in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel.
