The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), Pedro Nuno Santos, said this Saturday that the national leader of the PSD, Luís Montenegro, will not participate in the party's regional campaign in Madeira because "he is ashamed to appear alongside" the candidate, Miguel Albuquerque.

In a speech made at a PS rally on the island of Madeira, Pedro Nuno rejected the idea that Luís Montenegro's absence was related to the fact that the PSD candidate for the Madeira regional elections, Miguel Albuquerque, "does not need a crutch".

"He does not want [to appear], not only now, it was like this in the legislative elections, it was at the PSD/Madeira congress and it is now in the Madeira campaign," he said. "He does not believe in his candidate," reiterated Pedro Nuno Santos.

The socialist also accused the PSD of not ending 48 years of governance in Madeira "with pride". "They do not end well," he said.

Pedro Nuno Santos showed his support for the socialist candidate in the elections on the island of Madeira. "It is an enormous pride to have someone like Paulo [Cafôfo] making himself available to be a candidate for the regional government of Madeira," he said. The Secretary-General of the PS also revealed that he has "enormous pride in the socialist candidate".

The socialist said that Cafôfo "is someone with experience" and that "he is not just anyone", since "he has already proven himself". "He is someone with government experience, who did a great job in the Municipal Council of Funchal".

"Everyone knows, anywhere in the world, who Paulo Cafôfo is," said Pedro Nuno Santos, who considered that "the time has come to change the way we govern and live in Madeira".

The Madeira legislative elections will take place on May 26, with 14 candidacies competing for the 47 seats in the regional parliament. The early elections take place eight months after the most recent regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeiran parliament, following the political crisis triggered in January, when the leader of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was constituted an accused in a process in which suspicions of corruption are being investigated.
