The position was defended in statements to journalists, on the sidelines of the presentation of the PAN's electoral program, which took place at Quinta das Pintoras, in Lisbon, when she was asked if José Pedro Aguiar-Branco should apologize after the parliamentary incident on Friday.
"I think this reflection should be made by the president of the Assembly of the Republic in order to justify his words, which were probably unfortunate words, and that he is committed as president of this institution to human rights, integration, inclusion and to a society that is open to different communities," began Inês Sousa Real by answering. On Friday, during a parliamentary debate, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco refused to censor and limit the freedom of expression of the deputies, after the leader of Chega, André Ventura, questioned the ten years foreseen for the construction of the new airport, having said: "We can be much better than the Turks, than the Chinese, than the Albanians, we will have an airport in five years". Despite stressing that "a mistake does not make a mandate", the leader of PAN said she expected Aguiar-Branco to "retract" and, more than that, to be "intransigent with this type of behavior that does not value the inclusion and dignity of the human person and respect for all people". In the view of the leader of PAN, freedom of expression "cannot be a yardstick for everything, it cannot be a hat that fits forms of hostility or aggression", awaiting the explanations of Aguiar-Branco at the leaders' conference on the subject, already requested by the PS. "We appeal to the president (...) to come out publicly and clarify his position on these matters because the country needs to have an Assembly of the Republic strongly committed to social and human rights in the country," said Sousa Real. On Friday, after the parliamentary incident, in statements to journalists, the president of the Assembly of the Republic defended that it is not up to him to censor the positions or opinions of deputies, referring to the Public Prosecutor's Office for any criminal liability of the parliamentary speech.
