PCP questions the limits of freedom of speech in the AR: "What is the brake?"
The PCP secretary-general today considered that the problem of freedom of speech is not knowing what its limit is, in a reference to the position of the President of the Assembly of the Republic on the opinions of deputies.

"I will now go to the plenary next Wednesday, ask for the floor and say what I want, without limits. It doesn't seem like a good path", said Paulo Raimundo, stressing that the deputies "had to swear to comply and enforce the Constitution of the Republic" and that it "is very clear".
On the sidelines of a CDU dinner/rally in Funchal, as part of the campaign for the early regional elections of 26 May in Madeira, the communist leader reacted to the fact that the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Aguiar-Branco, had allowed, on Friday, that the leader of Chega, André Ventura, continued his speech, after saying that "the Turks are not exactly known for being the hardest working people in the world".
Aguiar-Branco considered that it is not his responsibility to censor the positions or opinions of deputies, referring to the Public Prosecutor's Office for any possible criminal liability of the parliamentary speech.
"I didn't want to downplay this event, but I think it should be put in its place", said Paulo Raimundo, recalling that a leaders' conference was called to address the case and that the PCP would be there to give its opinion.
The secretary-general of the communists stressed that he does not want to "give centrality" to the matter, but considered that the question is within the limits of freedom of expression.
"Free expression is free expression, but free expression is not a right in itself, it cannot be separated from other rights enshrined in the Constitution and there is one that is very evident", he said, stressing that the problem arises from the fact that no limits have been established for freedom of expression.
"What is the limit? What is the brake? There is none", he said.
On Friday, during a parliamentary debate, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco refused to censor and limit the freedom of expression of the deputies, after the leader of Chega, André Ventura, questioned the ten years foreseen for the construction of the new airport, having said: "We can be much better than the Turks, the Chinese, the Albanians, we will have an airport in five years".
