Mortágua demands that Aguiar-Branco comply with the Parliament's regulation

"What is expected from the President of the Assembly of the Republic [AR] is that he does not legitimize a far-right discourse. The position of the President of the Assembly of the Republic is worrying because it does not comply with the rules of procedure and it is worrying at the political moment when we see a dangerous rapprochement between Chega and PSD da Madeira, a few days before the elections in the Autonomous Region", said Mariana Mortágua.

The coordinator of the Left Bloc, who was speaking during a lunch in Viana do Castelo, proposed to the militants present a moment of "literature" about article 89, number 3 of the AR's rules of procedure.

She explained that "the speaker is warned by the President of the AR when he deviates from the subject under discussion or when the speech becomes insulting or offensive, and may withdraw the floor from him".

Mariana Mortágua questioned whether "in the light of article 89 of the AR's rules of procedure, can a deputy say that another nationality is lazy without this leading to an intervention by the President of the Assembly of the Republic".

"No, he cannot", answered in unison the militants present at the lunch, which was also attended by Sheila Khan, independent candidate for the 2024 European elections, and Adriana Temporão, district leader of the BE.

For Mariana Mortágua, if "the same insults had been directed at the President of the Assembly of the Republic", Aguiar-Branco "would not consider it to be freedom of expression".

"No one is asking Aguiar-Branco to be a prosecutor, no one is asking Aguiar-Branco to be a policeman. What is expected is that he be President of the Assembly of the Republic. What is expected is that he knows and complies with the rules of procedure", he defended.

On Friday, Aguiar-Branco stated in the AR that the use of language that qualifies races in a derogatory manner falls within the scope of freedom of expression and is admissible, after the leader of Chega said that the Turks "were not known for being the most hardworking people in the world".
