"We understand that the political conditions are not yet in place to close this tax relief process that the Government has initiated. We advise the Government not to rush the vote on the IRS in the Budget and Finance Committee to ensure that a consensus can be reached," he argued.

The leader of Chega was speaking to journalists at a press conference at the party's headquarters in Lisbon.

André Ventura said that "in recent days there have been several contacts regarding the approval of the new IRS regime" and pointed out that "it depends more on the Government" than on his party to reach a consensus.

"A consensus is still possible on tax relief, but it depends on the Government being able to change what it should have done a long time ago, the middle class must benefit the most from this tax relief. If so, you can certainly count on us. If not, you certainly will not count on us and the Budget and Finance Committee and Parliament will once again correct the Government, so it will have to do so in the next vote," he warned.

The leader of Chega expressed his willingness "to find solutions, but not solutions that will give more to the richest and that will take away from those who earn less and the middle class".

"If the Government is willing to do this, we will be here to work, if it insists obsessively and arrogantly on setting deadlines, closing targets and closing dialogue, certainly that will not happen on our part," he said.

Later, in statements to journalists in parliament, the PSD and CDS-PP challenged the PS and Chega to clarify their positions on the IRS reduction on Wednesday and to allow a reduction already "in July or August", leaving out the "party games".

The parliamentary leaders of the two parties that support the Government, Hugo Soares (PSD) and Paulo Núncio (CDS-PP), presented a substitute text for the executive's proposal - which was reduced to a specialty without a vote - and which they want to see admitted on Wednesday in the Budget and Finance Committee and voted in plenary on Friday, in general, specialty and final global vote.

Hugo Soares argued that the PSD and CDS-PP had already "gone as far as they could go", saying that the two parties had accepted five proposals from the other parliamentary groups.
