IL rejects agreements, only agreeing to negotiate "case by case" in Madeira

The head of the IL list for the regional elections in Madeira today again rejected agreements with other political forces, stating that the party is available to negotiate "case by case" and approve measures aimed at the development of the region.

"We are ready to negotiate concrete and relevant measures so that empowerment and development in the region become a reality", said Nuno Morna, in statements to journalists, on the last day of the electoral campaign.

According to Nuno Morna, the IL is available to analyze "case by case, point by point, decree by decree, Government Program by Government Program".

The IL caravan left the gardens next to the cable car, in Funchal, for the last street campaign, accompanied by a small band and some members and supporters, distributing leaflets, pens and 'pins'.

Nuno Morna said that on one side is a left-wing coalition, which includes the PCP and the BE, so that agreements are "completely out of the question".

On the other side, he continued, "the only thing that is prefigured is a 'Cheguingonça'", referring to a coalition of the PSD and the Chega, also rejecting this scenario.

Regarding the statements of the resigning president of the Regional Government and re-candidate, Miguel Albuquerque, who stated on Thursday that without a stable government led by the PSD "everyone will pay dearly", the coordinator of the IL/Madeira considered that it is a way of conditioning the vote.

"But, I think that everyone understands, the people of Madeira no longer need us to condition them by saying whether they will pay dearly or pay cheaply, they will pay what they think they have to pay. We cannot continue to be belittled with statements of this kind", defended Nuno Morna, the only deputy elected by the IL in the regional elections of September last year.

And he questioned: "Are we in this moment of great instability motivated by what? By the stability of the Government? The Government fell for a reason".

"And we also cannot continue to allow people's decisions to be conditioned based on majorities, there are minority governments all over the world that work very well, you just have to know how to govern. Either you know how to govern with the tools we have or you don't and you give way to others", he stressed.

The Madeira legislative elections are taking place with 14 candidacies competing for the 47 seats in the regional parliament, in a single electoral constituency: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, CDU (PCP/PEV), Chega, CDS-PP, MPT, PSD, PAN, PTP and JPP.

The early elections take place eight months after the most recent regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeiran parliament, following the political crisis triggered in January, when the leader of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was constituted as a defendant in a process in which suspicions of corruption are being investigated.

In September 2023, the PSD/CDS coalition won without an absolute majority and elected 23 deputies. The PS won 11, the JPP five, the Chega four, while the CDU, the IL, the PAN (which signed an agreement of parliamentary incidence with the social democrats) and the BE obtained one mandate each.
