"What I also expect as a voter is that people turn out to vote and do not let abstention win this electoral act that is very important for the future of Madeira and the Madeirans", said the BE's lead candidate.

Roberto Almada was speaking to Lusa, by phone, after voting at a polling station in the parish of São Martinho, set up at the Senior University, in Funchal.

The BE candidate also added that "those who want a better land and a better future can only have it if they exercise their right to vote".

Therefore, Roberto Almada appealed for everyone to go and vote, "taking a little bit of their time" and making the most of the sunshine and good weather that is being felt in the region.

As for the results of the electoral act itself, Roberto Almada stressed that he is "very confident" and, from that point of view, "[is] calmly awaiting the decision of the voters".

More than 254 thousand voters are called to vote today and 14 candidacies are presenting themselves to form a new regional parliament - 47 seats - and a new government.

The 292 polling stations distributed across the 54 parishes of the 11 municipalities of the archipelago are open between 08:00 and 19:00.

Running in the race are a coalition and 13 single parties. In relation to the 2023 regional elections, the only difference in terms of competing parties is the fact that the PSD and CDS-PP (who governed together in the last two legislatures) are presenting themselves on separate lists, when last year they ran as a coalition.

In the regional elections, the representative of the Republic, a position held by Ireneu Barreto, invites a political force to form a government based on the results (which must be published), after hearing from the parties with parliamentary seats in the current legislature.

In September 2023, the PSD/CDS-PP coalition won without an absolute majority and elected 23 deputies. The PS won 11, the JPP five, Chega four, while the CDU, the IL, the PAN (which signed an agreement for parliamentary incidence with the social democrats) and the BE each obtained one mandate.

The early elections are taking place eight months after the most recent regional elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeiran parliament, following the political crisis triggered in January, when the leader of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named a defendant in a process in which suspicions of corruption are being investigated.
