"What we regret is that, really, the people of Madeira have handed over the governance of our island again to the most corrupt person we have in the politics of Madeira. People continue to give in to the pressures of the party in power, to the fear of change, to the fear of reprisals", said to the Lusa agency Liana Reis, after the results of Sunday's regional elections, in which the RIR obtained 527 votes and failed to elect deputies.

The regional coordinator said that the RIR expected a better result, but stressed that the party started practically "from scratch", with a new coordination that is starting to become known to people.

As for the scenarios that are on the table, since the PSD won without an absolute majority, Liana Reis considered that "everything is possible", because, in her opinion, all the parties that were elected are capable of "selling themselves for a position".

"Either they really reach an agreement or in six months we predict a new dissolution of parliament", she added.

The RIR candidate also regretted the departures of the Left Bloc and the CDU from the regional parliament, considering that Madeira is losing out without the representation of those two party forces.

The PSD won the early regional legislative elections in Madeira on Sunday, failing by five deputies to obtain an absolute majority, when all the parishes have been counted, according to provisional official data.

According to information provided by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI), the Social Democrats obtained 36.13% of the votes and 19 seats in the regional parliament, which consists of a total of 47 deputies.

Last year, in the previous regional elections, the PSD and the CDS-PP, which ran together, elected 23 deputies, so the Social Democrats signed an agreement of parliamentary incidence with the sole deputy of the PAN.

Fourteen candidacies contested the 47 seats in the regional parliament, in a single electoral constituency: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, CDU (PCP/PEV), Chega, CDS-PP, MPT, PSD, PAN, PTP and JPP.

Sunday's early elections took place eight months after the most recent regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, dissolved the Madeiran parliament, following the political crisis triggered in January, when the leader of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was charged in a process in which suspicions of corruption are being investigated.
