PTP regrets that the people of Madeira have become accustomed to living with "corruption"

The PTP/Madeira's top candidate considered today that the result of the early regional elections on Sunday, which gave the victory to the PSD, without an absolute majority, shows that the Madeirans have become accustomed to living with corruption.

"Corruption is part of everyday life. Not only did people not penalize corrupt parties, but they also supported parties that support corruption, namely CDS and PAN," said Raquel Coelho, in statements to the Lusa agency.

The head of the list of the Portuguese Labour Party (PTP) reacted in this way to the result of the early regional legislative elections in Madeira on Sunday, in which the party obtained 0.90% of the votes (1,222).

The elections this Sunday were won by the PSD, which obtained 36.13% of the votes (49,103) and elected 19 deputies, having failed to reach the goal of 24 to achieve an absolute majority.

It was followed by the PS with 11 deputies, the JPP which rose to nine deputies, Chega obtained four, CDS-PP two and IL and PAN elected one representative each.

"I think that Madeira wants to copy the good examples, in quotes, that we have on the mainland. We want to have our own Isaltino Morais [Mayor of Oeiras], don't we," questioned, in an ironic tone, Raquel Coelho, regretting that the people of Madeira do not believe that there are other politicians or other parties that can "do better".

Anticipating post-election scenarios, the head of the PTP list foresaw understandings between the PSD, CDS-PP and Chega.

"I am convinced that this is the scenario. We have the CDS which, obviously, if the PSD gives them the presidency of the Assembly and I think that is what is on the table. Then we have Chega. There will be some agreement, either of parliamentary incidence or proposal by proposal," she predicted.

Fourteen candidates disputed the 47 seats in the regional parliament, in a single constituency: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, CDU (PCP/PEV), Chega, CDS-PP, MPT, PSD, PAN, PTP and JPP.

The early elections in Madeira took place eight months after the most recent regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeiran parliament, following the political crisis triggered in January, when the leader of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was charged as a defendant in a process in which suspicions of corruption are being investigated.
