The mandates of the mayors of the municipalities of Calheta, Carlos Teles, Ribeira Brava, Ricardo Nascimento, and São Vicente, José António Garcês, were suspended, the three of them serving their third and final term, as they were part of the PSD list.
The socialist mayors of the councils of Machico and Porto Moniz, Ricardo Franco and Emanuel Câmara, respectively, were also part of the PS/Madeira list and interrupted their duties in the municipalities. The mayor of the Municipal Council of Santa Cruz, the only local authority governed by Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), Filipe Sousa, had also suspended his mandate again, as happened when he was the party's top candidate in the national elections of 10 March. The six mayors, all serving their last term, suspended their positions between 15 April and 26 May. The six mayors were elected in the regional elections on Sunday and, therefore, will now have their mandates as regional deputies suspended. The early elections in Madeira took place eight months after the most recent regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeiran parliament, following the political crisis triggered in January, when the leader of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named a defendant in a process in which suspicions of corruption are being investigated. The regional legislative elections on Sunday were contested by 14 candidacies, one coalition (PCP/PEV) and 13 other parties: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, Chega, CDS-PP, MPT, PSD, PAN, PTP and JPP. According to the results released by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration, the PSD obtained 49,103 votes (36.13%), having achieved 19 deputies and missing the absolute majority by five mandates. In second place, the PS obtained 11 elected members, followed by the JPP, with nine, Chega, with four, the CDS-PP, with two, and the IL and the PAN, with one deputy each. The BE and the CDU leave the Legislative Assembly, in relation to the previous composition.
