"I can tell you that I am doing everything I can to try to be with the President of Ukraine during his visit to Portugal, not only because we were together in Kiev [Ukraine] a year ago, but also because Volodymyr Zelensky happens to be the president of a party that is a sister party to the Liberal Initiative," said João Cotrim de Figueiredo at the end of a street rally in Lisbon, an event that marked the official start of the campaign for the European elections.

The President of Ukraine will visit Portugal on Tuesday and will meet with the Portuguese Head of State, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic announced today.

The liberal candidate, who is accompanied by the president of the IL, Rui Rocha, on this first day of the campaign, guaranteed "unequivocal support" for Ukraine's struggle.

In addition to "unequivocal support", João Cotrim de Figueiredo expressed "full solidarity" with the Ukrainians in the defense of their territorial and political sovereignty.

"I would like to say this in person to Volodymyr Zelensky, a hero to the Ukrainian people," he stressed.

For his part, the president of the IL considered this visit in the context of an electoral campaign for the European elections "an excellent opportunity" for the Portuguese to reflect.

According to Rui Rocha, there are parties, such as the IL, that are clear in their support for Ukraine and in the importance of resisting and winning the war, which is the "right path", while there are others that defend that the country should give in to Russia's demands, which is "frankly undesirable".

At the invitation of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, Volodymyr Zelensky will be in Portugal on Tuesday, according to a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic on the Internet.

According to this note, released simultaneously by the office of the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, "President Zelensky's working visit is part of the shared intention to deepen the excellent relations between the two states, with a particular focus on strengthening cooperation in the field of security and defense".

"During his stay, the President of Ukraine will have working meetings with the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, and will be received by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa," the text adds.
