Zelensky visit shows that the path of integration is to "continue"
The PS head of the list for the European elections considered today that the visit of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to Portugal shows that the path towards the country's integration into the European Union "is to continue to be taken".

During an action in Setúbal on the first day of the official campaign for the European elections of June 9, Marta Temido was questioned about the visit announced today by the President of Ukraine to Portugal on Tuesday, during which he will meet with the Portuguese Head of State, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro.
"This visit by President Zelensky, long awaited, is also news that shows a path that must undoubtedly continue to be followed, and here this part of the Iberian Peninsula would like to have this contact, and I think that is very important", she stressed.
According to the head of the socialist list, already in the pre-campaign period, a PS delegation presented their compliments to the Ukrainian ambassador to Portugal.
"A very important conversation because the ambassador had been telling us that she expected (...) that the next steps towards Ukraine's integration into the European Union could still have developments during the Belgian presidency and apparently there have also been recent signs that this could still happen", she said.
According to Marta Temido, "there was also a conversation about the financial assets and the expectation that existed regarding their release and their allocation to the recovery of Ukraine", which also happened.
The PS candidate dismissed the existence of any reticence regarding the integration of the Ukrainian country into the European Union, considering that there is a "path to be followed with all seriousness and to do part by part", immediately ensuring compliance with the Copenhagen criteria since "this is a process based on merit".
"On the part of the European Union, the need to adapt both the budgets and the decision-making rules, as well as a set of other aspects to what is the integration of one more member state, which is not a small member state, which currently has a very specific context that makes all this work difficult", she pointed out.
For Temido, the European Union has been assertive in supporting Ukraine, stating that this has happened "from the very beginning and with successive efforts to respond to what are the needs" of the country, whether at a humanitarian, institutional, financial or political level.
