"Our challenge is difficult, because we have won four elections in a row and it is not easy to win five, but we are fighting for it", he told reporters in Évora, where today he joined the candidate of the Democratic Alliance (AD), the independent Sebastião Bugalho, on the first day of the campaign.

Luís Montenegro considered that this is "a journey of difficult participation, because traditionally the European elections are no longer the most motivating for voters" and, this year, they will take place on the eve of the national holiday of June 10th.

"The goal is to win the elections, but we have to be aware" and "have the democratic humility" to know that "there are more competing parties and that we must fight for the trust of the people", he said.

The social-democratic leader said he believes that abstention could decrease in these elections, even taking advantage of "the packaging of the legislative elections, which showed that the Portuguese are more motivated to participate".

"We will do our part", he guaranteed, considering that Sebastião Bugalho "has made an extraordinary campaign of contact with people, clarifying the main points" that lead the AD to envisage a mandate in the European Parliament in the next five years.

Questioned about the confusion that occurred in the last elections with the AD and the ADN, Montenegro stressed that it is important "that people can express their genuine, authentic will".

"If people want to vote for the ADN, they should vote for the ADN. If they want to vote for the AD, they should identify the place where to put the cross", he said, appealing that everyone makes "an effort in this area so that the popular will is not adulterated".

With the arrival of Montenegro, the blue and orange flags of the AD also arrived and the anthem of the legislative elections was heard again.

Montenegro returned to Évora about three months after having participated in a rally of the legislative elections there.
