Speaking at the executive's biweekly meeting, the socialist councilwoman Sílvia Sousa said that "the suspicions are very serious" and defended that it is "urgent and unavoidable" that the Chamber finds out "everything that happened".

She stressed that the communication director "represents the municipality", so she admitted that, eventually, he should be removed from his duties, until the situation is fully clarified.

In his response, the Mayor, Ricardo Rio, said that the situation did not occur during the performance of the duties that the person in question performs in the municipality, but rather "something in his private domain".

He added that the municipality will not suspend a collaborator for "alleged suspicions, which arise from his private life and which have not been proven".

"The Chamber does not investigate the private life of its collaborators", he added, also recalling the principle of the presumption of innocence".

At issue is the 2024 edition of the Rampa da Falperra, a motor racing event that took place from 17th to 19th May, in Braga.

The organisation will have detected the circulation of false invitations to the VIP area and the GNR was called to the scene.

The case was commented on social media and on a programme on Rádio Universitária do Minho, pointing out as responsible the communication director of the municipality of Braga, Ricardo Gomes, who is also a driver and who participated in the Rampa.

Contacted by Lusa, Ricardo Gomes said that he had already filed complaints for defamation and that he had asked the Mayor to return to his place of origin, at InvestBraga.

"So that it does not affect the good name of the municipality of Braga, an institution that I have always respected and to which I have dedicated myself diligently", he added.

According to the Mayor, the Clube Automóvel do Minho, responsible for organising the Rampa da Falperra, has already filed a complaint in court against uncertain parties for the appearance of false credentials, and it is now necessary to await the results of the investigation.
