Rui Rocha calls for attention in Europe to the "area of independent workers"

"I make a direct request to João [Cotrim de Figueiredo] regarding his priorities when he is in Brussels, which is the area of independent workers, service providers", appealed Rui Rocha while speaking at a dinner-rally in Lisbon, on Monday night, the day when the official campaign for the European elections of June 9th started.

In front of a room with more than 200 people, the liberal leader considered that "there is still much to be done" in the freedom of provision of services.

And he added: "In Europe there are many barriers that need to be eliminated, therefore, we trust you [João] to help independent workers so that they have a market in Europe where they can work with more freedom".

Despite understanding that "there is much to be done" in Europe in this matter, Rui Rocha considered that there is also "much work to be done" in Portugal.

In Portugal, independent workers live "a situation that is absolutely abusive", he stressed.

"I will give an example here, which is the abuse by the State, before workers provide the service, before invoicing and before receiving, they are already making payments on account to the State", he underlined.

And the same happens in relation to the withholding taxes that are made, he added.

"Self-employed workers pay a 25% withholding tax, but if we do the math on what is the average income that these professionals have, the corresponding rate would be around 15%", he argued.

Rui Rocha considered that "it is necessary to change this in Portugal as well".

The way is to solve it in Europe, but also in Portugal, it is not correct to say that all responsibilities lie with the European Union, as the PS and the AD do, accused the president of the IL.
