The Democratic Alliance (AD) top candidate for the European elections, Sebastião Bugalho, declined to speak directly about the 'invitation' made by the president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Luís Montenegro, to switch from independent to party member, joking about the issue. He also rejected feeling "cold" after the social-democratic leader admitted that it was "difficult" to win this electoral act.

"I can tell you that I have not submitted my retirement papers," he joked, in statements to journalists, during a visit to the Champalimaud Foundation, after being confronted with Montenegro's words, who yesterday joined Bugalho on the first day of the campaign.

Faced with insistence and questioned about whether he is considering becoming a PSD member, Sebastião Bugalho refused to commit, stating only that the guarantee he can give is that he is "committed" to the challenge of "having the best possible result" in the elections.

"The only challenge that the prime minister gave me was to have the best possible result in the elections and I can assure you that I am more than committed to this challenge and to fulfilling and accepting this challenge," he said.

Asked further if there is a cooling of expectations, after Montenegro admitted that the European challenge "is difficult", the candidate for the European Parliament assured that he continues with "high expectations", namely due to the support he has received.

"I don't feel cold at all. My vote is worth my vote. I work every day to deserve the trust of the Portuguese and the greatest possible number of votes. I do not guess the outcome of the elections. Expectation management is up to politicians, but what really matters to this candidacy is to work every day to take its program to the Portuguese, to make them feel that they have a voice in Europe and I am feeling that," he said.

"My expectations are high because I feel that the expectations about our program, about our measures, are also great," he stressed.

Sebastião Bugalho declined to say which names he expects to count on throughout the electoral campaign and stressed that the support of Leonor Beleza, former Minister of Health, made him "happy". As for tonight's debate, which will bring together all the candidates with parliamentary seats, the AD's top candidate assured that he is "prepared"

"Prepared, motivated and, above all, inspired," he added.

It should be recalled that the European elections will take place between June 6 and 9 in the various countries of the European Union and, in Portugal, the election is scheduled for June 9.
