"We have to be very clear on which side we are on, on the side of Ukraine, on the side of a country that was invaded by Russia", said Carlos Moedas, who was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the inauguration of the second proximity clinic of the Lisbon + Health municipal project.
Recalling that Lisbon was one of the first capitals to "react immediately in support of Ukraine", when Russia militarily invaded the country on 24 February 2022, the mayor considered that at this moment, with the campaign for the European elections of 9 June, it is "very important that the parties are very clear about their position so that voters can immediately judge their vote in relation to this catastrophe of a country that is invading a European country".
"I think it is of great significance for the country. It is important that President Volodymyr Zelensky feels that the Portuguese are with him, that Europe is with him because this is a war in Europe that we are experiencing and we have to fight with all our strength against this unacceptable invasion, against this horror in Europe, by a Russia that invades a territory, that invades a sovereign country", he stressed.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, is making a visit to Portugal this afternoon, where he will be received by the Head of State and the Prime Minister and will sign a bilateral cooperation agreement for ten years.
According to a note released on Monday by the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic and the Prime Minister's office, this is a "working visit" with the aim of "deepening the excellent relations between the two states, with a particular focus on strengthening cooperation in the field of security and defence".
Volodymyr Zelensky, who arrives in Portugal after a visit to Spain and Belgium, will first have a meeting at the official residence of the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, where a bilateral agreement will be signed, and will then be received by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the Palácio de Belém.
