Elon Musk came out against a US ban on TikTok on Friday in the name of "free speech," as American politicians prepare to vote on legislation this weekend that could effectively kill the popular platform.

TikTok has been in the crosshairs of US authorities for years, with many officials claiming that the platform for short, fun videos allows Beijing to spy on and manipulate its users in the United States.
On Saturday, the US House of Representatives will vote on a major aid plan for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, which also includes legislation on the social network.
If it comes into force, the law will force ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, to sell the app within a few months, or face being banned from Apple and Google app stores in the United States.
The measure was added to the aid plan in the hope of facilitating its passage through both houses of Congress, after a similar text adopted by deputies in mid-March remained in parliamentary limbo.
"It is unfortunate that the House of Representatives is using a must-pass government funding bill to once again try to advance a proposal that would violate the First Amendment rights of 170 million Americans," a TikTok spokesperson said on Thursday.
In the comments to Elon Musk's message today, users of the X social network expressed their fear that banning TikTok would create a precedent that could be used against other social networks.
This is because the law against ByteDance's platform would also give the US President the power to designate other apps as threats to national security if they are controlled by a country considered hostile to the United States.
