The nonprofit Mozilla has come out to urge that WhatsApp be included in Meta’s efforts to protect the integrity of this year’s US elections.
As Mozilla notes, Facebook and Instagram are frequently cited by Meta when it comes to combating misinformation, but the same is unfortunately not true of WhatsApp — one of the most widely used messaging apps in the world.
“Almost 90 percent of Meta’s pre-election security commitments are focused on Facebook and Instagram. Why has Meta not made a public commitment to a similar election-protection roadmap for WhatsApp?” Mozilla researcher Odanga Madung said in an interview with Engadget.
Among Mozilla’s suggestions are identifying potentially false content that has been forwarded many times on WhatsApp, and placing restrictions on forwarding and on the broadcast and Communities features.
For its part, WhatsApp said in a statement to The Verge that the company “is one of the few to intentionally limit forwarding and to label messages that have been forwarded many times.”
“We’ve also developed new tools that give people the ability to search for accurate information and protect themselves from unwanted contact,” WhatsApp said.
