Facebook, Instagram face new EU antitrust probe
The company will be investigated for the way it handles misinformation during electoral processes.

The European Commission has confirmed that it has opened a new investigation into Meta and its handling of election-related content on its social networks, as first reported by the Guardian.
The investigation, which the EU said is part of the Digital Services Act, was prompted by the European body’s concerns that Meta’s moderation efforts are not sufficient to prevent risks “to electoral processes and fundamental rights” of European citizens.
“We have concerns that Meta’s moderation is insufficient, that there is a lack of transparency in the processes for moderating ads and content”, European commissioner for competition Margrethe Vestager said.
At the same time, the investigation is also meant to ensure that “appropriate measures are taken to prevent the vulnerabilities of Facebook and Instagram from being exploited by foreign interference”.
Meta did not directly comment on the investigation, saying only that the company has “a robust process to identify and mitigate risks on our platforms”. The tech giant added that it remains open to “continuing our engagement with the European Commission and providing further details on this work”.
