Carlos Abade spoke during the inauguration ceremony of the new facility, a three million euro investment located on the campus of the Estoril Hotel and Tourism School, whose goal is to "support the creation and training of new companies and new business models for the tourism sector".
Considering that the inauguration of the CIBT is a "landmark moment in the history of tourism in Portugal", Carlos Abade stressed that it is "a commitment of tourism to the future through technology and innovation" and a place "open to the entire sector" where "the future will be thought about".
"It is a fundamental piece in the mosaic that is the set of instruments and initiatives that Turismo de Portugal and the sector, in partnership, have been launching to boost the economy [...], but it is also a fundamental piece in a project that we want and have been launching, which is the International Tourism Academy on this 'Estoril campus, and this is another step in that direction", he said.
For the president of Turismo de Portugal, the CIBT is, therefore, "an essential contribution to the affirmation of tourism as a nuclear activity in the process of transformation and growth of the Portuguese economy [...], as a nuclear activity in improving people's lives [...] and as a nuclear activity in strengthening the country's economic cohesion".
"The commitment of tourism to the future is demonstrated here", he argued, emphasizing that it is "an irreverent, non-conformist sector that seeks to be excellent and on which Portugal and the Portuguese can count".
With three fully equipped floors and resulting from national and international partnerships that Turismo de Portugal has been developing in the areas of education, research and innovation, the CIBT will be co-managed by NEST - Tourism Innovation Center and has offices, 'cowork' spaces, technology rooms, 'pop-up', equipment and research laboratories.
Turismo de Portugal is one of the eight founding members of NEST. The others are ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, Brisa Via Verde, Google, Microsoft, Millennium BCP, NOS and BPI.
