The launch attempt could take place "no earlier than 6:16 p.m. EST Friday, May 17" to allow for repairs, according to a statement Tuesday from the U.S. space agency.
Boeing's Starliner spacecraft was supposed to blast off Monday on its first flight with astronauts aboard, a trip to the International Space Station that would add a second commercial crew capsule to the world's fleet of operational spaceships. About two hours before the planned liftoff, as the two NASA astronauts were climbing into the capsule, the launch was called off: A problem had cropped up with a valve in the Atlas V rocket that is supposed to propel Starliner into orbit. The two astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, will remain in quarantine in the meantime, NASA said. Boeing needs this final test flight to show its spacecraft is safe to carry astronauts to and from the space station, a goal that's already four years behind Elon Musk's SpaceX. For NASA, which ordered the capsule a decade ago, the stakes are also high: Having a second crew vehicle besides SpaceX's would provide a backup in case of emergencies or problems with either spacecraft.
