The city of Helsinki has been hit by a cyberattack that may have compromised the data of up to 80,000 students and 40,000 city employees, Finland’s cybersecurity authority said on Thursday.

A data network used by the city’s Education Department, which oversees early childhood through high school education in Helsinki, was the target of a cyberattack on April 30, said Jussi Eronen, an official with Finland’s National Cyber Security Centre.
“This is one of the most extensive data breaches that has hit Finnish cities,” added Eronen, whose agency is assisting the affected organizations.
The attackers exploited a vulnerability on a server connected to the network, and were able to access the names, email addresses and personal identity numbers of students, their guardians and staff at schools in the capital.
They also obtained the usernames and email addresses of all city employees, the Helsinki city government said in a statement on Monday.
“This is a very serious data breach that may have far-reaching consequences for our customers and our personnel,” said Jukka-Pekka Ujula, the city’s director of education.
“Some of the documents contain sensitive or confidential personal information,” such as medical certificates or sick leave, the city said.
“We cannot rule out the possibility that the perpetrator of the attack has gained access to data on individuals covered by a non-disclosure order,” the city said in the statement.
It could take days or even months to identify the perpetrator of the attack, Eronen said.
The cyberattack came on the same day that a man was sentenced to more than six years in prison for hacking into tens of thousands of psychotherapy patient records in Finland.
