US asks China for global consensus on responsible, safe use of AI
The US has called on China for a “global consensus” on the responsible and safe development of artificial intelligence (AI) worldwide, during a bilateral meeting in Geneva, while accusing the Chinese of “misusing” the technology.

According to National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson, the representatives held an "open and constructive" discussion about AI safety and risk management on May 14 in Geneva. At the time, she said, "the US underscored the need to ensure that all AI systems are safe, secure, and reliable in order to reap the benefits of AI." Meanwhile, the US delegation, led by National Security and Technology Director Tarun Chhabra, raised "concerns about the misuse of AI, including by China." CNN reported Wednesday that US intelligence detected China's attempts to influence the 2020 election by using AI-generated "deepfake" video and audio content, a technique that seeks to realistically simulate someone's voice and video.
